For most of human history, light was a simple variable. The sun rose, reached its peak, and set. The body responded accordingly — cortisol spiked at dawn, melatonin rose after dark, and the biological systems governing sleep, metabolism, mood, and immune function followed a reliable daily arc. That arc, the circadian rhythm, is as fundamental to human physiology as breathing.

Electric light changed the equation in ways we are still understanding. The ability to flood a room with bright, blue-spectrum light at 11 p.m. is a relatively recent invention, and the human body has not adapted to it. What Tunable White Lighting Actually Means

Tunable white lighting refers to fixtures and systems capable of adjusting not just brightness but color temperature — the warmth or coolness of the light itself. A standard fixture produces a fixed color temperature, often around 3000K. A tunable white source can move across a range, typically from roughly 2000K (a very warm, amber tone) up to 6500K (a cool, daylight-equivalent tone).

In a well-designed circadian lighting system, that range is programmed to follow a daily arc. Morning light in the bedroom might be a moderate 3500K at a comfortable brightness — enough to signal wakefulness without being jarring. By midday, common areas might shift slightly cooler and brighter. In the hours before bed, the bedroom transitions through progressively warmer tones, ultimately settling at 2200K or lower — a spectrum that has minimal effect on melatonin suppression.
